Background: The prickly pear cactus, also known as the Barbary fig cactus, came to Morocco by way of Mexico in the 1700’s. Since then, the rich soil of Morocco has allowed the cactus to flourish, and the cactus now plays a fundamental role in the lives of many Moroccans. The fruit of the cactus has many known health benefits, and is often eaten in the summer. However, most of the health benefits are found in the fruit’s tiny seeds.
Extraction: Our prickly pear cactus oil is sourced directly from Morocco where we use only the best available plants and extraction methods. Our seeds are cold pressed, which means the only force used to extract the oil is gravity. Cold pressed oils retain all their natural aromas and nutritional values because there are no zero additives in the extraction process. Extracting the oil from prickly pear cactus seeds is particularly labor intensive because it takes one ton of seeds to create one liter of oil. This is one of the reasons the prickly pear oil is so rare, desirable and expensive.
